The Dismantling Racism and Hate Act (the Act) was passed on April 1, 2022. It was drafted by an All-Party Committee and informed by community engagement. The Act was the first of its kind in Canada and signified government’s commitment to addressing systemic hate, inequity, and racism in government policies and programs.
The Dismantling Racism and Hate Act (the Act) was passed on April 1, 2022. It was drafted by an All-Party Committee and informed by community engagement. The Act was the first of its kind in Canada and signified government’s commitment to addressing systemic hate, inequity, and racism in government policies and programs.The Act required the development of an all-of-government strategy by July 31, 2023. The Office of Equity and Anti-Racism worked with community and across government since the act was passed to develop this strategy. This strategy demonstrates government's continuing commitment to addressing the needs of underrepresented and underserved communities. It contains actions from across government that address community needs and concerns. The strategy was released on July 6, 2023.
As required by the Act, the strategy contains actions and initiatives that address underrepresented and underserved communities and their intersecting identities, as well as actions that are tailored to the needs of specific communities. The strategy also contains:
definitions of specific types of hate, inequity and racism,
a community-focused approach to engagement,
measures and indicators that will assess the effectiveness of the strategy,
a health equity framework, and
actions to address psychological health and safety in the workplace.
